Deer at Hollywood Reservoir have bone in mouth – NBC Los Angeles

Officials conducted an operation in Hollywood on Tuesday to save a deer that appears to have a bone in its mouth and throat.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife closed the popular Lake Hollywood entrance Tuesday while they searched for the injured deer.

“She has what looks like a femur stuck in her mouth and throat,” said Kevin Howells, a biologist with the state agency.

People living nearby alerted Department of Fish and Wildlife officials after the deer’s video clip began circulating on social media.

The doe appears to be part of a small herd made up of seven of the eight deer that live in the lake area.

“I saw her briefly yesterday afternoon. But she went down the slope toward the water, and I had no chance to immobilize her,” Howells explained.

Officials planned to immobilize the doe with a tranquilizer dart and then remove the bone and give her the medical treatment she needs before releasing her.

They hoped to catch her quickly because the deer may have trouble eating.

“She’s not completely emaciated yet, but she’s getting there,” Howells explained. “She is, I think, clearly incapable of fetching water or surfing.”

Browsing, according to Howells, is how deer eat, plucking leaves or plucking shoots for food.

If the bone is not removed, the doe will likely die. And she is susceptible to infections and predators.

The mysterious part is how it happened in the first place, since deer typically eat berries, nuts and twigs.

“Deer chew bones to get nutrients they’re missing from their diet, so that’s a possibility,” Howells said. The doe must be in pain because it seems uncomfortable, he continued.
