Defensive coordinator among 4 killed in Georgia school shooting

Richard Aspinwall, the defensive coordinator for Apalachee High School’s football team, was one of four people killed in a mass shooting at the school on Wednesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified Aspinwall, 39, as one of the dead. He is listed as the football team’s defensive coordinator and a math teacher on the school’s website.

Before joining Apalachee, Aspinwall was a teacher and coach at Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of former Mountain View High School teacher and coach Ricky Aspinwall, who lost his life today at Apalachee High School,” the Mountain View High School athletic department said in a statement on its Facebook page. “Mountain View extends its deepest condolences to the entire Apalachee High School community.”

Messages left with Aspinwall’s family and the Barrow County School District were not immediately returned.

Aspinwall, math teacher Christina Irimie, 53, and 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo were killed when a gunman opened fire inside the school Wednesday morning, the GBI said. The GBI said Colt Gray, 14, surrendered when confronted by police, was arrested and will be charged with murder.

On Wednesday evening, the GBI said it is still investigating, collecting evidence and trying to determine how the events occurred.

Nine other people, eight students and a teacher, were injured in the shooting and taken to hospitals.
