Democrat senator responds to Gaetz nomination: ‘Red alarm moment’

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., warned Tuesday that President-elect Trump’s pick of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., as U.S. attorney general was a sign of Trump’s intention to follow through on promises to prosecute his opponents come.

Murphy called the firebrand Floridian “dangerously unqualified” to lead the Justice Department, noting Gaetz’s insistence on the need to abolish the FBI and other law enforcement agencies that do not align with conservative priorities.

“Gaetz has been Trump’s leading defender when it comes to Trump’s attack on democracy. His attempt to overthrow the government on January 6. And he has openly called for the abolition of law enforcement agencies if they do not align with conservative political priorities. Murphy said.

“This will be a moment of alarm for American democracy. Matt Gaetz is being nominated for one reason and one reason only: because he will implement Donald Trump’s transition of the Justice Department from an agency that stands up for all of us to an agency that is simply an arm of the White House, designed to to pursue and prosecute Trump’s political enemies.”

Trump sent shockwaves through the political world on Wednesday when he named Gaetz, who has never worked in law enforcement, as the nation’s top law enforcement officer. In a statement, Trump praised Gaetz as “a very gifted and tenacious attorney” who will “end the gun-toting government, protect our borders, dismantle criminal organizations and restore Americans’ deeply damaged faith and trust in the Department of Justice.” will recover.”

Murphy noted that several Republican senators have already expressed opposition to the controversial, now ex-congressman, who was previously under a year-long investigation following allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a minor. The Ministry of Justice ultimately did not file charges.

“You could literally hear the jaws of Republican senators dropping, who will now be in a position to oppose Donald Trump in a way they previously didn’t want to,” Murphy said.
