Denver Broncos are monitoring the progress of Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert’s injury

After a few days of practice this week, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert remains limited. Herbert suffered a high ankle sprain in his right foot in Week 2 and reportedly re-aggravated it the following game.

In the Chargers’ Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefshe wore an ankle brace and batted the bye. That was him spotted this week wearing a brace in practicealso, so that ankle doesn’t seem to be quite 100% with a match to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High on deck.

The Broncos’ No. 2 scoring defense won’t have an easy time with Herbert either. The Broncos defense ranks No. 3 in total yards, No. 10 against the run, No. 5 against the pass and No. 3 in sacks.

That doesn’t sit well with a quarterback with limited mobility as talented as Herbert. Now, given his head coach – Jim Harbaugh – there is every reason to believe Herbert will play Sunday, even though he is listed as a limited participant in the Chargers’ Friday practice.

The Chargers also have two offensive tackles on the injury report. Joe Alt (knee) was fully available on Thursday, while Rashawn Slater (pecs) was also limited.

The Chargers defense is currently the NFL’s best scoring unit, but if there’s a vulnerability, it’s the pass rush. And the Chargers don’t appear ready to improve anytime soon, with edge rusher Joey Bosa not participating in practice this week as he works back from a hip injury.

Meanwhile, the Broncos could be down two offensive starters of their own, with right tackle Alex Palczewski and center Luke Wattenberg thus far not participating in this week’s practices. The Broncos brought back Cam Fleming to, ostensibly, help with the tackle question marks, while Alex Forsyth is set to start in Wattenberg’s place.

Wide receiver Josh Reynolds is also scheduled to practice this week, so that’s a situation we’ll keep a close eye on on Friday. Broncos defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers was dealing with a shoulder injury and was limited in Wednesday’s practice but was fully available Thursday.

The Broncos started the clock this week with running back Audric Estime and cornerback Damarri Mathis returning from injured reserve. Both were full participants in every training this week, so make sure you have an official activation before Sunday.
