Deputy Secretary of Defense honors veterans’ contributions to national security during Veterans Day message

This week, in a Veterans Day speech, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks paid tribute to America’s veterans and highlighted the profound impact of their service on the enduring freedoms enjoyed by all Americans.

Hicks emphasized the invaluable role veterans have played in ensuring the nation’s security and preserving democracy.

“Every Veterans Day, we as a nation take a moment to honor the lasting contributions of America’s veterans,” said Hicks. “The service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans have enabled us all to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy today, as well as for generations to come.”

The Deputy Secretary then expressed the Department of Defense’s gratitude to the veterans for their tireless efforts in national security. “To all our veterans, past and present, our nation is forever grateful for your service,” she continued. “Thank you for all you have done to deter aggression, protect our democracy and ensure our national security.”

Veterans Day, celebrated annually on November 11, has deep historical significance, dating back to the end of World War I. On November 11, 1918, the signing of an armistice marked the end of hostilities, and the day became known as Armistice Day. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first armistice to commemorate peace and honor those who had made sacrifices in service to the country.

The celebration grew in size and importance, and in 1954, Congress renamed the holiday Veterans Day to honor all veterans who have served in the armed forces. Hicks took the time to acknowledge this legacy and linked it to the continued work of the Department of Defense and the current generation of service members who are following in the footsteps of veterans.

Hicks’ comments underscored the alignment between the Defense Department’s mission and the sacrifices of veterans. She expressed her pride in the collective achievements and contributions of all who served. Hicks praised veterans for their courage and resilience and recognized their sacrifices as the cornerstone of America’s defense.
