Detroit Lions Amon-Ra St. Brown: ‘We know we are special’

The Detroit Lions seemed simply unbeatable at times. During their eight-game win streak, they have won in a number of different ways. However, in games like Sunday’s against Jacksonville, the team shows very few flaws and looks like a championship team.

This success comes from a sense of belief that was widespread throughout the roster, as many of the key contributors were with the team during last season’s NFC Championship run. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has emphasized the importance of taking the long season one game at a time, but acknowledged the Lions are in the middle of something extraordinary.

“We know we’re special. We know we’ve been special since the beginning of last year,” St. Brown said. “We have guys that we feel like, on offense across the board, that are special players, special athletes and coaches that love the game, that put us in position to make plays, that put themselves in front of us I know this group is special, and so is the defense, of course, but I’m only speaking for the offense. We know we have a special group and it’s just a matter of performing on Sunday, making the play, on standing in the right places and just trusting ourselves.”

St. Brown has also been at a different level individually. With 685 yards through the first ten games, he is on pace for what would be his third straight 1,000-yard season. He also scored a touchdown in eight straight games.

Still, the USC product hasn’t spent much of the regular season focusing on his individual legacy or the mark he’s making with his own performance. Instead, he remains driven to do whatever it takes to ensure his team continues to increase its total in the win column.

He has developed a good rapport with quarterback Jared Goff, who has shown unwavering confidence when throwing the ball in his direction. The two have linked together 65 times and at one point this season have scored 30 consecutive goals without an incompletion.

“Pretty good, I can rely on him for absolutely everything and I think at some point during that game it felt like, ‘Hey, call whatever and let’s just let St. Brown get to work,’” Goff said about St. Brown. “He’s as good as they come and I enjoy playing with him.”

St. Brown admitted he is aware of the career resume he is already building, and has proven to be one of the most motivated individuals in the entire league, but the focus remains every win week.

“I think everyone is thinking about it. Everyone wants to leave a lasting mark, or a legacy, whatever you want to call it in this league, or you want to be remembered for something,” St. Brown said. “We are working on special things at the moment, but as I have said to everyone: now is not the time to really think about it. Right now we are in the middle of it, we are in the middle of it. This week we we’re the Colts and we’re going to keep trying to score points, make plays and help the team win.”

Party planning

The Lions, led by St. Brown, put on some of the most unique celebrations the league has seen throughout the regular season. When asked Wednesday, St. Brown said the team doesn’t actually have a group chat for celebrations, except for one: the first touchdown of the game against Houston.

St. Brown said the idea was passed on to him by Jameson Williams, so the wideout created a group chat with some of his offensive teammates. He said the hardest person to convince was Jared Goff, who said he would only do it if Frank Ragnow did.

Although Ragnow eventually joined the celebration, Goff did not because he was too far away from the play.

“We have a group chat with recipients, I’m pretty sure each skill group has its own group chat,” St. Brown explained. “The running backs have theirs, the receivers have ours. I will say before the Texans game I did a quick one with a couple of linemen, Jared, tight ends, receivers, just to spread the word that when we score the first touchdown Jamo is right, Jamo came up with that one, he sent it to me. He said, ‘Saint, you have to tell everyone, they will listen to you.’ I said, ‘I bet I’ll send it.'”
