The Detroit Tigers bought themselves some wiggle room by winning Tarik Skubal’s start in Game 2 and took care of business with a relatively stress-free Game 3, but gave away a chance to close out the series in Game 4 when Beau Brieske surrendered. a huge home run for David Fry, turning the game – and the series – on its head.

Game 5 got off to a fairly mundane start, with Matthew Boyd striking out three Tigers batters in the first inning after allowing two runners, while Steven Kwan reached on an odd hit that could have been an error, but Skubal worked around the runner quite effortlessly.

The good news for the Tigers is that they had the ultimate ace on their hands, with Skubal set to take the mound for his third start this postseason. Skubal has been astonishingly good thus far, giving up just seven hits and no runs in thirteen intense innings in Houston and Cleveland. This will also be Skubal’s third start on the road, something the southpaw has enjoyed so far, addressing the crowd as he walked down the mound and hyping his team along the way.

This game will launch significantly earlier than ever planned, but you won’t find many anxious Tigers and Guardians fans complaining about the shorter wait to discover their fate. Game 5 was initially scheduled to start at 4:08 PM, but was then moved to 8:08 PM after the Yankees defeated the Royals and no longer needed a Game 5, but was then pushed back to 1:08 PM due to weather concerns.

The big question going into the game was the status of Game 2 hero Kerry Carpenter, who had to leave Game 4 after tweaking his hamstring while playing third base to score a run. The Tigers remained relatively coy on Carpenter’s status, saying he made a decision during the game, but manager AJ Hinch insinuated he was encouraged by what he saw from Carpenter Saturday morning at Progressive Field.

After Tarik Skubal sidestepped a shaky hit from Steven Kwan in the first, it looked like the Tigers might have something to work with in the second. Parker Meadows doubled down the leftfield line and then stole third base to get into prime position with one out. However, the Tigers continued their playoff battle with runners in scoring position when Jake Rogers flew to right field but it was too shallow to score Meadows, then Trey Sweeney had a non-competitive strikeout to end the inning. Skubal then made quick work of the Guardians in the second inning, striking out one and forcing two groundouts.

Matthew Boyd looked a little shaky out of the gate, hitting Justyn-Henry Malloy in the first at bat of the game, but bounced back with a strikeout of Matt Vierling. Boyd then walked Riley Greene to put a second runner on base, but corrected the error by striking out Andy Ibáñez and Wenceel Pérez to end the inning.

With a win, the Tigers will advance to the ALCS to play the New York Yankees for the American League pennant, while a loss will end the Tigers’ 2024 streak.

The Tigers had a chance to close the series on home court in Game 4, but lost the hard-fought game 5-4 to reach maximum distance. It was a back-and-forth battle at Comerica Park and the Guardians came out on top with another clutch hit, a two-run pinch-hit home run from David Fry, to keep their season alive.

The Tigers have star pitcher Tarik Skubal ready to throw the deciding game. Skubal is 2-0 in the postseason without giving up a run over 13 innings, including seven innings of shutout ball against the Guardians in Game 2 to spark a late rally. On the other hand, former Tiger and left-hander Matthew Boyd will get his second start of the series for Cleveland after also starting Game 2 and giving up no runs in 4⅔ innings.

Designated hitter Kerry Carpenter is still a game-time decision with a hamstring injury, while catcher Jake Rogers is fully active after clearing foul balls from his catch wrist in the last game.
