DeVonta Smith in the slot: Eagles Kellen Moore unlocks fantasy football goldmine

The Philadelphia Eagles made DeVonta Smith one of the highest paid wide receivers in the NFL this offseason, and if Week 1 is any indication, that contract is worth its weight in gold.

According to PFF’s fantasy football picks, Smith moving into the slot position in Game 1 with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore calling the shots could lead to fruitful results for both the Eagles and fantasy players.

Here’s what PFF had to say about Smith’s performance:

There was some speculation this offseason that Smith could play more in the slot. He studied CeeDee Lamb this offseason and has a much higher average yards per route run from the slot. It’s a key position in Kellen Moore’s offense.

While Smith didn’t appear in the slot for 100 percent of the 11-person snaps, he did appear in about three-quarters of them, up from last season.

When Smith wasn’t in the slot, AJ Brown often filled that role with similar slot rates to last season. Smith had a solid performance with seven receptions for 84 yards, but his usage in this game indicates that there are much bigger games ahead of him this season.

Smith was outstanding in the Eagles’ 34-29 win over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. He moved the chains consistently and served as a security blanket for quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was far from his best Friday night. When Moore smelled blood late in the fourth quarter, he called a bold pass play that Hurts completed to Smith for a first down that essentially allowed the Eagles to run out the clock.

The former first-round pick has been a model of consistency, with three straight 1,000-yard seasons to his name. That real breakout season could come in 2024. Smith’s ability to line up anywhere makes him the ultimate X-factor in Moore’s offense.
