Luis Diaz scored both opening goals as Liverpool visited Old Trafford, although Trent Alexander-Arnold also had an early goal ruled out for offside in the build-up to the match.

Diaz scored his first goal from a cross by Mohamed Salah, the Colombian heading the ball past Onana after Dominik Szoboszlai managed to avoid the ball at the last moment.

Diaz doubled Liverpool’s lead just before half-time, again with an assist from Salah. After Ryan Gravenberch won the ball back in midfield, he dribbled to the edge of the Man Utd penalty area before passing the ball to Salah, who slotted it to a waiting Diaz. Diaz then curled the ball into the bottom right corner from about 12 yards.

With this second goal, Diaz became the first away player to score twice in the first half of a Premier League match at Old Trafford since Pascal Gross in August 2022.

He also became only the second Liverpool player ever to achieve the feat, after Mo Salah in October 2021.

Diaz scored 13 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season and he now has three goals in three games under Slot, showing he has earned his place in Liverpool’s starting line-up.
