Did my vote count? See which states offer ballot tracking

Millions of Americans are showing up to the polls today as Election Day finally arrives. But after people cast their votes in person or by mail, many wonder how they can make sure their vote actually counts.

Like much about the electoral process across the country, the answer to this question may be more complicated than initially thought.

Rules vary depending on where you live and also depending on how you vote. Because elections are administered by each of the fifty states, there is a patchwork of rules across the country, some of which vary by province.

People who vote in person are usually assured that their votes will count when they see and fill out their ballot at a polling place. But concerns sometimes arise because mail-in votes are not counted toward elections.

According to a study by the Election Assistance Commission, more than 98% of mail-in votes were counted in 2020, while only 0.8% of votes were rejected. With this in mind and with just hours to go before the polls close, here’s how to track the status of your ballot.
