Dodgers’ Dave Roberts thinks Manny Machado ‘intentionally’ threw the ball at him in dugout after ‘disturbing’ video

Game 3 of the NLDS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres has already built tension after Game 2’s incidents involving thrown objects, players jawing at each other from opposing teams, and the historic rivalry sprinkled on top.

But Padres star third baseman Manny Machado, who threw a ball into the Dodgers’ dugout — a dugout he used to share as a member of the team — has gone all the way to the MLB league office to investigate, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Manager Dave Roberts also believes Machado didn’t just put the ball out of play, while Padres pitcher Yu Darvish got another one from his catcher.

Roberts said he believed Machado deliberately hit the ball toward the dugout, which almost hit him, after watching a video that went viral.

“I didn’t notice it at the time. I really didn’t,” Roberts told the New York Post on Monday. “I didn’t notice it. I saw the video and it was disturbing. I’ve obviously been in a relationship with Manny for years. There was intent behind it. It almost didn’t affect me because there was a net.

“And that was very annoying. If it was directed at me, I would be very – it’s quite disrespectful. So I don’t know his intent. I don’t want to speak for him. But I did see the video. And the ball was aimed at me with something behind it. But I don’t know what led to that. I didn’t see it in real time, but I did see the video.

Machado was at the center of one aspect of the Game 2 drama, when he yelled at Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty, who told him to “sit down, motherf—–” after striking him out in the sixth inning.

Machado, now at third base, continued to wage a war of words with Flaherty and appeared to say he would meet with him after the game.

Flaherty explained why they were barking at each other.

“He did a few things between innings where he threw the ball towards our dugout and everyone caught the end of it, that’s me and him going for it,” Flaherty said, referring to the ball being thrown in the direction was thrown from the ball. Roberts. “I was sitting there in front of my team, I didn’t go up to him, but he threw the ball into our dugout and the referees immediately went over to tell him – I don’t know what their conversation was, but our dugout -out was dismissed because there is no reason for it.”

It is common for players to throw balls out of play when not in use, sometimes trickling them into the opponent’s dugout. But Machado clearly put some speed on the throw, even though he said there was nothing behind it.

“I throw balls into dugouts all the time. Both dugouts,” he told The Post. “They have bat guys, you throw the ball back in.”

Roberts added that he shook his head at Machado as the third baseman and Flaherty went back and forth, the reason being to keep Machado from blocking Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit on purpose by his pitcher the inning before.

“As a baseball player, everyone understands that you don’t do that, deliberately put the first man on base, down three, four, five. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Roberts said.

With Jurickson Profar dealing with objects being thrown at him from the stands, the Padres bullpen dealing with the same thing, and the animosity between players, it’s safe to say there is bad blood between these two teams and fan bases heading into a crucial Game 3 on Tuesday. night at Petco Park in San Diego.
