Dodgers vs. Angels Preview, Playoff Preview, Pitching Matchups & TV

Technically, the Dodgers’ road trip continues on Tuesday, but in reality the team is already home, playing two games against the Angels at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

These are Shohei Ohtani’s first games that count in a stadium he’s called home for the past six seasons. He drew a standing ovation during the Freeway Series exhibition during spring training at Angel Stadium in March.

This week concludes the interleague portion of the Dodgers’ schedule, with them taking on the Angels and then hosting the Guardians at Dodger Stadium, part of a series of 14 games against American League teams out of 18 over three weeks. The Dodgers’ 27-14 record in interleague play is third-best in baseball, trailing only Atlanta (27-13) and Milwaukee (31-15).

Two games in Anaheim as four pitchers try to turn around their lost season in the final month.

Former Louisville teammates and fellow 2020 first-round draft picks Bobby Miller and Reid Detmers won’t play each other, as Detmers starts for the Angels on Tuesday and Miller starts for the Dodgers on Wednesday. Both were sent to the minors after struggling this season.

Detmers returned when the roster expanded in September after three months with Salt Lake, having struck out 29 batters in his last three Triple-A starts, allowing just three runs in 21 innings. Miller still struggles with his control — sometimes with his offspeed pitches, sometimes with his fastball — but his last two starts showed some semblance of something to build on, even as he hit home runs, striking out 12 batters in 11 innings.

Walker Buehler will start Tuesday’s opener, hoping to complete five innings for the first time since June 12. The right-handed pitcher has a 5.88 ERA in 11 starts and is three starts back from a two-month shutdown caused by right hip inflammation. Buehler played poor defense against the Orioles last Wednesday and was pulled after 4⅔ innings, but said afterward, “I’m as encouraged as I’ve been since 2021.”

Griffin Canning starts for the Angels on Wednesday and leads the American League with 83 earned runs allowed this season. His 5.19 ERA ranks 59th among 61 qualified pitchers in the Major Leagues, but he has the best ERA among the four starters in this series, with Detmers at 6.12 and Bobby Miller at 7.25.

The Dodgers and Angels played to a draw on June 21 and 22 at Dodger Stadium.

On television, there are multiple ways to watch locally, in addition to SportsNet LA, with the Angels airing both games on Bally Sports West. Tuesday’s season opener will also be on MLB Network, though that coverage will only be available out of market.
