Dolphins lose running back De’Von Achane to concussion against Patriots

Dolphins running back De’Von Achane suffered a concussion late in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against New England.

Achane was injured at 3am during a 12-metre run. He was tackled out of bounds by Patriots safety Jaylinn Hawkins, whose helmet made contact with Achane’s helmet during the tackle. Achane lay there for a few minutes as the team’s trainers tended to him.

He was then taken to the sideline medical tent and ruled out of the match with a concussion. He had three carries for 18 yards before leaving the game.

The third-round pick out of Texas A&M burst onto the scene last season, but injured his knee against the Giants and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 11. He was activated on November 18 and had 14 carries for 107 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown against the Bills. But he never regained his spark early in the season.

In 11 games and four starts as a rookie, Achane finished with 800 yards on 103 carries and eight touchdowns. He also had 27 receptions for 197 yards and three touchdowns.

The Dolphins have suffered a slew of injuries in the offensive backfield in 2024. Raheem Mostert returned on Sunday after missing three games with a chest injury. Achane injured his ankle earlier. Jeff Wilson (knee, oblique) and Alex Ingold (shoulder) were also injured. Rookie Jaylen Wright was healthy.

The Dolphins need the running game to take a step further. With Tua Tagovailoa still in the concussion protocol and backup quarterback Skylar Thompson nursing bruised ribs, Miami started Tyler Huntley vs. the Pats as the passing game continues to struggle.
