Driver dies in crash in Niagara County

A motorist was killed in a two-vehicle crash in the town of Somerset Tuesday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the report, a 2024 Nissan traveling north on Carmen Road was struck at approximately 2:30 p.m. when it failed to yield the right of way to a 2019 GMC truck traveling east on Lake Road.

After the collision, the Nissan came to a rest in the middle of the intersection, investigators said, and the truck drove into a nearby cornfield.

The driver of the Nissan, a 78-year-old man, was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, where he died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

The truck driver, a 77-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to Lockport Memorial Hospital for treatment. He is not in life-threatening condition.

The names of the drivers were withheld pending notification of their families. An investigation is ongoing.
