Dwayne Johnson says music fans should sing along in movie theaters

Dwayne Johnson has a warm view of singing in movie theaters.

The actor, 52, reprising his voice role as the animated singing Polynesian demigod Maui Moana 2told BBC News during the UK premiere on November 24 that he endorsed it “especially if you like music”, adding: “that’s the fun of it.”

The actor’s response comes as the internet has erupted into a debate over cinema etiquette following the release of Bad: Part One. Moana 2 sails into theaters on Wednesday, November 27, and as far as Johnson is concerned, fans should feel encouraged to sing and enjoy.

“Sing! You paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, you went to a musical and you’re into it,” he told the outlet. “Sing.”

The nation’s largest theater chain, AMC Theaters, sparked renewed interest in whether or not moviegoers should feel entitled to sing during musical films when it began playing a 30-second advisory featuring scenes from Bad which once again emphasizes AMC’s signature “silence is golden” reminder.

AMC spokesperson Ryan Noonan said The Indianapolis Star in a Nov. 19 statement that the chain “has a long-standing policy that prohibits disruptive behavior,” while also noting that the chain Bad pre-show spot “incorporates the film’s themes as a fun, engaging reminder to moviegoers so as not to disrupt the experience for those around them as they enjoy the show.”

That debate then played out in theaters and on the Internet all weekend, with videos of teachers reminding students not to sing during class. Bad go viral.

Johnson returns for another round of seafaring musical adventure Moana 2in which his character Maui once again teams up with Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) and a new cast of characters to save the people of her island Motunui once again. For Johnson, the sequel marks a family affair: His daughters Jasmine, 8, and Tiana, 6, whom he shares with wife Lauren Hashian, performed voiceover work for characters in the new sequel.

Moana 2 can be seen in cinemas everywhere from November 27.
