Eagles manage Jalen Hurts’ health to reach postseason healthy

PHILADELPHIA – During Wednesday’s practice, warmups were underway and the boys in the red vests were spinning the ball up and down, waiting to actually get in. Well, only two in the red vests did: Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee.

The third quarterback had put aside his shoulder pads and helmet and was working on his flexibility with a large band and a trainer. This is part of the Eagles’ plan to get Jalen Hurts to the postseason relatively healthy, something that has been a struggle in previous seasons when he had a shoulder issue one year and an ankle injury the next.

“I think everything is about that,” he said after training. “I think that goes for all of us too, because the whole team is ready to go at this time of year… I think it’s the mentality of where we are right now.

“We’re at a stage of the year where things very easily – well, they didn’t end the way we wanted – and so that’s at the top and in the back of my mind as we go into this stage. and emphasized finishing strong. Putting ourselves in a good place.”

Hurts was listed Wednesday with an ankle injury, something head coach Nick Sirianni said a lot about last week.

As he always does when it comes to his health, Hurts shrugged.

“Just a little program for the mini-bye,” he said. “I’m doing good. …Really, throughout the year, just make sure you do the things you need to do to stay on top of things. That’s kind of what we do. A lot of other players do that too.”

Yes, but he’s the quarterback and a healthy Hurts is a Hurts who can get this team to the Super Bowl just like he did two years ago.

Just as the bye came at the right time in week 5, the mini-bye also came at exactly the right time.

“Yes, I would say so,” Hurts said. “It’s kind of crazy how it plays out because we had an early bye week and then we had this time here. And so even as we talk about our game in general, assessing things and taking the bye week through the same process, and seeing how we can become more efficient and clean up the little things. Just having those conversations and trying to build things up.

The Eagles won all six of their games after the bye. If they win their last seven, they’ll finish at 15-2, which would likely mean the road to New Orleans and the Super Bowl would lead through Philly.

It starts with the Rams in a primetime game on Sunday night, and while it seems highly unlikely that the season ends with a thirteen-game winning streak, the only way the Eagles have a chance to do the improbable is with a healthy Hurts .
