Elections 2024: NYC Breaks Record for Highest Turnout on the First Day of Early Voting Over the Weekend

NEW YORK (WABC) — On Election Day, millions of Americans will have already voted in early voting.

Four years ago, only 30 percent of people voted in person on Election Day and 69 percent voted early or by mail.

As early voting opened in New York and New Jersey this weekend, more than 140,000 people voted in New York City on Saturday, making it the city’s highest Day 1 turnout ever.

Brooklyn had more than 40,000 people early Saturday, more than 38,000 in Manhattan, more than 16,000 in the Bronx, more than 31,000 in Queens and more than 13,000 on Staten Island.

Voters across the country say the economy, immigration and abortion are the biggest issues they care about.

A new ABC poll found that voters trust former President Donald Trump when it comes to immigration and the economy.

Vice President Kamala Harris performed better on issues such as abortion and the threat to democracy.

All three states are offering early voting until Sunday, November 3.

New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams was one of the first voters in Brooklyn early Saturday.

“This is amazing. I’m very impressed to see this and I’ve been watching the news and it looks like there are lines all over the city,” he told Eyewitness News.

‘I’m so excited about that. That people are involved. I hope to see lines like that across the country.”

New Yorkers are just as excited as Williams. Voter Pamela Patur said she is focused on getting youth to the polls.

“I’m really excited about getting young people to vote to influence them and help them understand that their vote counts,” she said.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont is among those who have already benefited from early voting. He cast his vote in Greenwich on Friday morning.

Lamont tried to vote on the first day of early voting in Connecticut on Monday, but instead posted a photo of the long line and decided to postpone it until Friday.
