Elise Stefanik: Three priorities for Donald Trump’s new UN ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Representative Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations, meaning she will take over three crucial UN policy issues: Israel, Ukraine and China.

In announcing the appointment today, Trump told CBS News: “I am honored to nominate Chairman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough and smart America First warrior .”

The representative of New York’s 21st Congressional District, and chair of the House Republican Conference, will replace Linda Thomas-Greenfield as US ambassador to the UN, and has already made a name for herself as a staunch Israel defender in the Congress. as well as an ally of Trump in securing the southern border and his commitment to “peace through strength.”

Israel

Representative Stefanik made headlines after her questioning of former Harvard President Claudine Gay about pro-Palestinian protests on Harvard’s campus in December 2023.

Stefanik pressed Gay to answer whether she would allow students to call for the “genocide of the Jews” on campus, to which Gay responded that it depended on the context of those calls, resulting in widespread criticism at Gay and at Harvard University.

Stefanik has also expressed support for Israel’s decision to cut aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA).

In a November 4 press release, Stefanik said: “The United States must support Israel’s decision to ban the Hamas-infiltrated UNRWA from operating in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. UNRWA personnel took part in the horrific terrorist attacks on October 7, its headquarters housed an underground Hamas data center, and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was carrying the passport of a UNRWA teacher when he was killed.

“The Biden-Harris administration has sent more than $1 billion to UNRWA since 2021, filling the coffers of this terrorist front. This must end.”

Moreover, her position on Israel’s battle with Iran is evident from her X account (formerly Twitter), where Stefanik posted on November 10: “The US is ready for a return to President Trump’s MAXIMUM PRESSURE campaign against Iran.

“For too long, our enemies have been emboldened by the weakness of the Biden-Harris administration.

“With President Trump at the helm, Peace through Strength is back.”

Ukraine

Despite Stefanik calling Vladimir Putin a “war criminal and deranged criminal” in 2022, when Ukraine funding was up for a vote in Congress in April 2024, she voted against it.

In a statement to the Adirondack daily ventureStefanik said she has “supported Ukraine’s right to defend itself with lethal assistance, including weapons, ammunition and training” for the duration of this invasion. Biden continues to fail to address the crisis at our southern border.”

Although the funding bill ultimately passed, several Republicans in the Senate also voted against it, including newly elected Vice President JD Vance.

China

Similar to her position on Israel, Stefanik has also taken a position on China regarding the country’s involvement on college campuses.

Following an article by the Washington clear beacon about how a Harvard student was expelled by another student for interrupting a speech at the Kennedy School by the Chinese ambassador to the US, Stefanik wrote a press release about this to her constituents.

Stefanik said in the October press release: “We cannot allow American institutions of higher education to serve as tools for communist China to carry out its transnational repression.

“I look forward to working with Chairman Moolenaar and Chairman Foxx to hold Harvard accountable and end Communist China’s infiltration of American universities.”
