Elon Musk bet big on Trump – and won. Will this be profitable for Tesla?

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk’s embrace of newly elected President Donald Trump is paying off for Tesla shareholders today. But the question investors are asking is what this budding relationship will mean for them in the coming years.

Trump, who won convincingly on Election Day, is linked at the hip with Musk, who has supported Trump both in rhetoric and with major financial commitments.

Musk, the richest man in the world, recently added donations totaling $43.6 million to America PAC, his GOP super PAC, in early October. His total known political spending this year now stands at more than $132 million, Yahoo Finance reports.

That is one of the largest amounts spent on a political candidate and a party. In response, Trump even promised Musk a position in his administration, suggesting Musk could lead a committee to increase government efficiency.

Trump referred to Musk during his victory speech early Wednesday morning, calling him a “super genius” and claiming that “we have to protect our geniuses.” We don’t have that many of those.”

But the relationship between Trump and Musk hasn’t always been so rosy. It was just a few years ago, in 2022, when Trump denigrated Musk on Truth Social, the conservative rival social media platform to Musk’s Twitter (now X).

“When Elon Musk came to the White House and asked me for help with all his many subsidized projects, whether they be electric cars that don’t run long enough, self-driving cars that crash, or rocket ships that go nowhere, without which subsidies he also would have sucked, and if I had been told he was a huge Trump fan and Republican, I could have said, ‘Get on your knees and beg,’ and he would have done it,” Trump wrote.

This was in response to Musk’s statement that Trump was too old to run for president again. Musk had purchased Twitter earlier that year and invited Trump to return to the platform, along with many other figures who were banned for offensive views.

Musk is an environmentalist and believes humanity must move beyond fossil fuels to save the planet – and if that means people buying Tesla’s electric vehicles, then he’s all for it. Trump is an unapologetic fan of fossil fuels and has big plans to open up drilling and roll back emissions regulations and clean energy subsidies.

But Musk’s embrace of free speech, deregulation and anti-woke policies pushed him closer to Trump and the Republican Party. A criticism from President Biden at an EV summit hurt Musk, who many say has done more than anyone to make electric cars mainstream in the US.
