Elon Musk may already be outstaying his welcome in Trump’s orbit

Tech billionaire Elon Musk got a big win Tuesday night when newly elected President Donald Trump announced that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO would join Vivek Ramaswamy in leading a new Department of Government Efficiency.

The announcement reinforces the close relationship Musk has managed to achieve with Trump, even after the election. But for some people close to Trump, Musk’s presence felt overbearing.

Musk has been so aggressive in pushing his views on Trump’s second term that he is stepping on the toes of Trump’s transition team and may be overstaying his welcome at Mar-a-Lago, according to two people familiar with the matter with the transition and having spent time at the Palm Beach, Florida, resort this past week.

The sources said Musk’s near-constant presence at Mar-a-Lago in the week since Election Day began to rub off on people who have been in Trump’s inner circle longer than the tech billionaire and who feel he has played down his role in the election. exceeds. transition. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly.

“He acts like he’s a co-president and makes sure everyone knows,” one of the people said of Musk.

“And he certainly gets a lot of credit for the president’s victory. Brag about America PAC and X to anyone who will listen. He’s trying to make President Trump feel like he owes him something. And the president doesn’t owe anyone anything,” this person added.

Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for the Trump-Vance transition, said in a statement: “Elon Musk and President Trump are great friends and brilliant leaders working together to make America great again. Elon Musk is a once-in-a-generation business leader and our federal bureaucracy will certainly benefit from his ideas and efficiency.”

Musk traveled to Mar-a-Lago last Tuesday evening to watch the election results, and has been there for much of the past week, the two sources said. They said Musk is always there, sitting with Trump and participating in calls and meetings.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been involved in sensitive conversations even before his role in the administration was announced, including briefly participating in a phone call last week between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

A Trump adviser said Elon Musk would join Trump in a meeting with Republican lawmakers on Wednesday ahead of the leadership election.

The second person said Musk has “an opinion on and about everything,” and that he shares it so forcefully that he’s starting to harass Trump insiders.

“He wants to be seen as someone who has a say in everything (even if he doesn’t),” this source said.

The person said some Trump advisers said they worried Musk didn’t understand one key to being effective in Trump’s world: keeping a low profile. Musk’s involvement has been overly aggressive and could hurt his position in the long term, the source said.

The second source also said Musk appeared to be pushing his own agenda, rather than focusing on Trump’s. They said that while Musk is clearly a smart and capable person, the transition is about ensuring that those loyal to Trump are the ones implementing government policy.

“Appointing people because they are loyal to Elon doesn’t work,” the source said.

Musk is among Trump’s most energetic supporters. His super PAC spent more than $152 million to elect Trump and other Republican candidates, with much of the money coming from Musk himself. He held rallies for Trump in the state of Pennsylvania, offered $1 million daily giveaways to registered voters and turned his social media app X into a bullhorn for Trump.

In posts on X over the past week, Musk has floated several policy ideas, including deporting immigrants and cutting government spending.

“Very productive day at work from the transition team,” Musk wrote Monday evening in a response to Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, one of two advisors leading the transition.

Musk also shared photos from Mar-a-Lago, including a photo with him and the extended Trump family. On Sunday, one of Trump’s grandchildren, Kai Trump, posted a photo to X of herself with Musk, writing that Musk was “reaching uncle status.”

Musk’s private jet landed in West Palm Beach, near Mar-a-Lago, last Tuesday and stayed there for about 24 hours, according to the @ElonJet account on Bluesky, which uses publicly available flight data. The plane took off from West Palm Beach last Wednesday and headed to Austin, Texas, where Musk has a home, but then landed back in West Palm Beach on Friday and has stayed there for the past four days, according to the report. It is not clear whether Musk was on the plane for every flight.

The relationship between Musk and Trump has been rocky over the years, despite their recent alliance. Musk said in 2022 that Trump should “hang up his hat and sail off into the sunset,” prompting Trump to hit back at the point that Musk would be “worthless” without government subsidies.

There has been intense speculation about the long-term viability of Musk and Trump’s relationship given the two men’s ambitions and personalities, with many people on social media predicting an eventual falling out between the two.

But Musk has already made gains in one respect since the election: Tesla’s stock price is up more than 15% from last Wednesday’s opening price, surpassing the 1.8% growth in the S&P 500 over the same period.
