Erik ten Hag blames three Man United players after Brighton defeat

Manchester United suffered a closing defeat to Brighton thanks to Joao Pedro’s winning goal in the 95th minute.

The Red Devils started their season last week with a late win over Fulham, but this week the Seagulls scored a winning goal in the closing stages.

Former Man United player Danny Welbeck had put Brighton ahead, but the lead was cancelled out by a goal from Amad Diallo.

Alejandro Garnacho thought he had put Man United ahead but VAR disallowed his goal after the ball hit striker Joshua Zirkzee and then went in, who was offside.

Joao Pedro surprisingly found himself free in the penalty area late in the game and he finished off the easy chance he was given by firing past Andre Onana.

Erik ten Hag was visibly angry after the match and blamed three players who could have stopped the cross in the penalty area, which led to the goal.

In his post-match interview he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail:

We must learn.

‘It’s so unnecessary when you defend the goal like we do and then drop points.

Brighton Man United Joao Pedro
Man United’s defence was shaky against Brighton.

“There were so many things in that moment. We have to talk and be on the same page in such moments about what we have to do. Everyone knows their job and as a team we protect our goal.

‘We didn’t stop the cross (from Simon Adingra). There were three players, right-footed players, who should have sent him down the line and not allowed the cross.

“We need to talk about how we act as a team in that situation. There was more than one mistake on that occasion and it had a big impact on the score.

‘We conceded two easy goals, but as a team we should have responded better.’

The manager still has some work to do to improve his team’s defence, as it appeared that Manchester United had learned nothing from last season.

Last season they kept conceding stupid goals and it looks like they are doing the same this season.

Man United need changes at the back for stability

Perhaps it is time to start Matthijs de Ligt, who has come on as a substitute in both games so far.

Harry Maguire should have been better informed about the first goal, while several players were responsible for the second.

It is not a good sign for Ten Hag and Man United that they are so weak in defence so early in the season.
