ESPN has updated the Top 25 poll for Week 2

There were statements made during the opening weekend of the 2024 college football season. Some were good, some were not so good. But with some notable results across the country, there was predictably enough change in ESPN’s top 25 rankings following Saturday’s games.

One team that is on the decline is Clemson. Their impotent offense failed to generate momentum again in a 31-point loss to top-ranked Georgia, creating even more chaos in the ACC’s early pecking order.

On the way up? Right now, it’s Miami, which debuted transfer quarterback Cam Ward to rave reviews after throwing for 385 yards and three touchdowns in a statement win over visiting Florida, a game that should help the Hurricanes capitalize on the ACC’s shakeup.

Notre Dame scored a key victory as it visited a ranked Texas A&M team in its first game under head coach Mike Elko. The Fighting Irish scored 10 points without response in the final period to earn a key victory in an extended playoff race without a conference title to be won.

Where does that leave things in the latest ESPN top 25 college football rankings? Here’s the final poll coming out of the College Football Power Index computer prediction models for Week 2.

Alabama (3 up). A nice jump for the Tide, who defeated the Hilltoppers 63-0 thanks to five touchdowns from Jalen Milroe. Bama is back in double figures in the FPI win projection.

Oregon (down 8 points). The Ducks played a remarkably exciting home game against Idaho, despite Dillon Gabriel showing fantastic numbers and scoring in the final phase to distance themselves from the Vandals.

Louisville (up 8 points). Tyler Shough threw 4 touchdown passes as the Cardinals beat Austin Peay 62-0 and suddenly they’re the second-best team in the ACC on the index.

Clemson (down 8 points). Just three points behind Garrett Riley’s offense against Georgia’s pass rush, and once again, Dabo Swinney’s approach is being heavily criticized.

Miami (up 12 points). Cam Ward looks every bit as good as he promises, tearing apart the Gators defense with his arm as the Canes’ backs scored twice.

Michigan (down 3 points). The champions played a little too excitingly against Fresno State in the season opener, but Will Johnson decided the victory with a six-pointer, while Texas awaits in Week 2.

UCF (up 11). The Knights collected 454 rushing yards in a first-round victory over New Hampshire.

Auburn (up 3). Four of Payton Thorne’s 12 completed passes were touchdowns as the Tigers’ new receiving corps defeated Alabama A&M 73-3.
