ESPN is testing a generative AI avatar called ‘FACTS’

ESPN is testing an AI-generated avatar during its Saturday college football show SEC nation. Called FACTS, it will “…promote education and enjoyment in sports analytics” using information from ESPN Analytics, which includes data such as the Football Power Index (FPI), player and team statistics and match schedules. We didn’t see the avatar in action, but it sounds like a botified version of stats encyclopedia Howie Schwab, ESPN’s first statistician and eventually the star of a mid-2000s game show. Stomp the Schwab.

ESPN has already brought generative AI to its website with AI-written game recaps. FACTS is still in development and there is no word on when it would first appear on the network.

In its ESPN Edge Innovation Conference announcement, the network claims that FACTS was “absolutely not” created to replace journalists or other talent. “FACTS is designed to test innovations in the marketplace and create an outlet for ESPN Analytics data, making it accessible to fans in an attractive and enjoyable segment,” the company wrote.
