ESPN predicts the College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings after Week 12

With only two weeks left in the regular season, the College Football Playoffs Rankings round out their form after a Week 12 tryout that paved the way for a brand new rankings reveal Tuesday night on ESPN.

But before that, ESPN insider Heather Dinich published her predictions on how the CFP committee might rank its latest Top 25 after two Top 7 losses from BYU And Tennessee in Week 12. The main benefactors of these setbacks were a trio of two-loss SEC teams Alabama, Ole ma’am And Georgiathe latter of which sent the Vols home with a convincing 31-17 defeat in Athens.

Of course, the final decision will come down to the 13-member committee, which will meet in Grapevine, Texas ahead of Tuesday night’s big reveal.

There is no change at the top as the Big Ten’s leading Ducks survived a scare Wisconsin and rallied in the fourth quarter for a 16-13 road victory on Saturday. Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback Dillon Gabriel had an inconsistent game passing of just 218 yards, 92 of which went to the star receiver Evan Stewartbut Oregon runs back Jordan James held it down with 121 rushing yards and a tying touchdown run in the fourth quarter to power a 10-0 showing in the final frame.

Dinich noted that while the overall result “wasn’t pretty,” a hard-fought road win in the Big Ten will be enough to keep the Ducks No. 1 in the committee’s eyes, especially considering the head-to-head win over Ohio. State, which once again remains at No. 2 in the rankings.

The Buckeyes aren’t going anywhere after a convincing road win, a 31-7 win over Northwestern at Wrigley Field. Ohio State’s offense once again proved to be one of the best all-around units in college football at quarterback Will Howard and run back Quinshon Judkins each contributed two touchdowns each in the loss.

Dinich called Ohio State’s one-point loss to No. 1 Oregon as “the best loss in the country” and why it will stay ahead of No. 3 Texas, which scored a road victory on its own against a newfound rival. Arkansas. Dinich also believes the Buckeyes’ win at Penn State is another feather in the cap in the committee’s eyes.

The Longhorns remain atop the SEC standings with a hard-fought 20-10 road victory in Fayetteville, reviving a former Southwestern Conference rivalry with plenty of history. Despite an unconvincing effort from his offense, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers still produced a few touchdown passes Matthew Gold to stay in the driver’s seat for an SEC Championship Game bid ahead of the games against Kentucky and bitter rival Texas A&M in two weeks.

Dinich pointed to the Longhorns’ “decisive win against Florida” and a strong performance in Arkansas as more reasons why the CFP committee will likely still see Texas in the top three in the country. Dinich also cited the committee’s respect for Texas’ lone loss to resurgent Georgia, which should return to the 12-team field this week after a convincing home win over former No. 7 Tennessee on Saturday night.

James Franklin and Penn State reaffirmed itself as a Big Ten contender with its second convincing conference win by dominating the host Purdue 49-10 on Saturday. The Nittany Lions remain on the outside looking in for a shot at the Big Ten Championship game, but should still remain ahead of undefeated Indiana in the eyes of the CFP committee ahead of the Hoosiers’ Week 13 showdown with the state of Ohio.

Dinich cites the strength of Penn State’s schedule (No. 56) for its placement over undefeated Indiana (No. 100), and made it clear that the Nittany Lions should be guaranteed a spot in the 12-team field as long as it remains win. during the last two weeks.

Indiana was inactive in Week 12 and should remain at No. 5 in the latest CFP rankings, having done nothing to warrant a move. That said, all eyes will be on the Hoosiers’ Top 5 showdown against No. 2 Ohio State – with ESPN’s College GameDay on site – as the Game of the Week in Week 13. It’s a make-or-break game for Indiana , which has drawn a lot of outside criticism for its unimpressive schedule and lack of Top 25 wins this season.

That narrative would go out the window with a win over the host Buckeyes, but there aren’t many prognosticators who will pick that particular upset this week. Still chairman of the CFP committee Warde Manuel – Michigan’s athletic director – has cited Indiana’s convincing wins on the field as a reason for their respect. But if the Hoosiers want to stay in the CFP field, it will require a strong performance against the first real test of the season Saturday in Columbus.

The Fighting Irish are boosted by the BYU loss and remain in a perfect position to secure a spot in the 12-team CFP field if they continue to win. That’s easier said than done, of course, with a date with an undefeated Army awaiting Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium on Saturday as part of the Shamrock Series. The Irish are heavily favored with an 87.6% lead according to ESPN’s matchup predictor.

Notre Dame has won eight in a row since a dramatic home loss to Northern Illinois, which remains a black eye for the Irish’s playoff hopes. That said, Dinich mentioned a potential win over Army (which still sits atop the AAC standings) as a nice feather in their CFP cap if Notre Dame pulls out the win in NYC. Of course, a loss to Army could completely wipe out the Irish’s playoff chances and put the Black Knights in contention for a seat in the 12-team playoffs, should it secure one of the conference’s five championship spots .

Mario Cristobal and Miami were quiet in Week 12, still nursing the wounds from the previous week’s painful loss at Georgia Tech. Yet with matchups in prospect Wake up forest And Syracusethe Hurricanes should maintain their place as the ACC’s top team in the eyes of the CFP committee, thus securing a first-round bye as the likely ACC champions. Led by Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Wardthe Canes are definitely a team to watch when the Playoffs start.

Dinich pointed to the committee’s appreciation for Miami’s “dominant” offense through the first nine weeks of the season, but the lack of quality Top 25 wins remains a black mark on the Canes’ Playoff resume. If Miami were to stumble in the final two weeks, that resume could be enough to completely knock Cristobal and company out of the field and put multiple two-loss SEC teams in the mix for a home first-round matchup.

The Crimson Tide dominated the FCS foe Mercer at home, 52-7, and remains in contention to potentially secure a spot in the SEC Championship game if it can close out the regular season with wins over Oklahoma and domestic rival Chestnut brown. Since a 24-17 loss to Tennessee, Alabama has outscored its opponents 128-20, including wins over then-Missouri and LSU.

The Tide should remain the best two-loss team in the country in the eyes of the CFP committee, given their head-to-head wins over Ole Miss and Georgia, both of which are looking better and better with each win these two continue to pile up. That said, Dinich mentioned the previous loss to Tennessee as something the committee will take into account when compiling this week’s rankings.

Avenue Kiffin and the Rebels sat quiet in Week 12, still reveling in their home win over Georgia the Saturday before, and remain in the CFP mix entering the final two weeks of the regular season. Next is a date with Florida in The Swamp, never an easy place to play, as LSU learned this weekend. Ole Miss has won three in a row and could end the regular season on a five-game win streak and prepare for a home first-round matchup in the Playoffs if all else holds true.

Dinich cited the committee’s positive impression of the Rebels’ head-to-head upset over Georgia as a stronger indicator of their Playoff potential after tough-to-swallow losses to Kentucky and LSU, both of which have seen their seasons derailed. Still, as long as Ole Miss continues to win its last two games against Florida and rival The state of Mississippishould have no problem securing a Playoff spot.

The Bulldogs are back in the College Football Playoff field with their convincing 31-17 home victory over previously No. 7 Tennessee. That should be more than enough for the CFP committee to allow Georgia to slide back into the 12-team field after being bumped following an ugly 28-10 loss at Ole Miss two weeks ago. Carson Beck showed why many considered him a potential No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick entering the season with a pair of passing touchdowns to a tight end Oscar Delp as well as a hasty score of its own.

Dinich called the committee’s rating of Georgia’s 30-15 road win at Texas, currently the third team in the CFP rankings, “one of the best wins of the year,” according to Manuel. The Bulldogs’ impressive win Saturday, along with a strong offensive performance that many fans have been waiting for all season, keeps Georgia in the mix for a possible rematch with the Longhorns in the SEC Championship game, and a chance to win a to secure first place. round play-off see you later if history repeats itself.
