Ethel Kennedy, whose late husband was assassinated during his 1968 presidential campaign, raised 11 children, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who recently ended an unsuccessful bid for the White House.

Kennedy’s life was marred by periodic tragedies. In addition to her husband’s death, her parents died in a plane crash in 1955 and her brother died in a crash in 1966, while her son David died of a drug overdose and Michael Kennedy, another son, died in a skiing accident.
