Even Bill Simmons wasn’t impressed with Tom Brady’s television debut

Tom Brady made his NFL broadcasting debut on Sunday when he covered the Cleveland Browns-Dallas Cowboys game on FOX. Reviews were mixed, but it was his first time, so there’s plenty of room for improvement in the coming months.

Still, Brady is the biggest news in sports media right now, so people are lining up to weigh in on his performance. Including Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer and one of Brady’s biggest supporters from his days as quarterback of the New England Patriots. In the latest episode of Guess the Lines on the Bill Simmons PodcastSimmons and cousin Sal Iacono were strongly opposed to Brady’s debut.

“Listen, Collinsworth was one of the big winners today because Tom Brady did the Browns-Cowboys game and I love Tom Brady, he brought me six Super Bowls,” Simmons said. “Let’s just say he was a little raw. To say the least. So when we got to Collinsworth a couple hours later, Collinsworth looked like Bradley Cooper in Unlimited compared to Brady. He saw everything. He had jokes ready. Brady, I just hoped he could make sentences. It was a difficult debut, to say the least.”

As an aside, Collinsworth wasn’t perfect either, as he was confused about the overtime rules during the Rams-Lions game, proving that even the best commentators make mistakes. Now back to Brady.

In the case of one of Brady’s most loyal fans, Simmons thought the GOAT might have been focusing on the wrong things. Specifically, that Brady was overprepared and “forgot the part where it’s like we’re supposed to hang out and watch a football game with Tom Brady.”

Simmons specifically noted that Brady didn’t try to explain what went wrong with Deshaun Watson over the past few years, which played into Sal’s hands for a joke that was made by many people on Sunday.

“I think he was just happy that everyone could focus on Deshaun’s massive $300 million-plus contract and not mine.”

Good or bad, Brady will remain an easy target for the take machine all season long.
