Is this meat related to the Deli Meat recall?

No. The BrucePac meat and poultry recall is not related to the Boar’s Head meat recall, which this summer caused the country’s largest listeria outbreak in a decade. That outbreak killed 10 people and sickened dozens of others who ate processed meats at a Virginia plant that has since closed permanently.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a foodborne illness most commonly contracted by eating improperly processed meat and unpasteurized dairy products because the disease spreads easily on deli equipment, surfaces, hands and food, according to the CDC. People who eat food contaminated with the listeria monocytogenic bacteria can develop a listeriosis infection. Most healthy people do not become seriously ill from a listeria infection, but people over 65 years of age, newborns and pregnant women are disproportionately affected. They may experience only mild symptoms, but babies in the womb can die from listeria. Pregnant women are 18 times more likely to get listeriosis than other healthy adults. The listeria bacteria can survive refrigeration and even freezing, making them difficult to eradicate once found.

Big number

2. There have been two listeria outbreaks linked to contaminated food products so far this year. Two people died and 26 became ill due to a contamination of queso fresco and cotija cheese in February. The Boar’s Head recall led to 59 cases and 10 deaths this summer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were three listeria outbreaks in 2023 linked to leafy greens, ice cream and fruits.
