Explosion damages St. Patrick’s Parish Center in O’Neill; No injuries reported

O’NEILL, Neb. (KSNB) – First responders are still on scene after an apparent explosion that rocked the small community of O’Neill early Monday morning.

The explosion occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at the St. Patrick’s Church Parish Center, a two-story dormitory building on the northwest corner of the school grounds, near Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital.

Video footage shared by KBRX Radio shows firefighters battling towering flames as high as 50 to 60 feet in the parish center.

Amy Weindel of the Archdiocese of Omaha said the center was heavily damaged but there was no evidence of foul play. In a statement on its Facebook page, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church expressed gratitude that no one was in the building when the explosion occurred.

The video below, provided by News Channel Nebraska, shows the extent of the damage in daylight.

KBRX Radio also reported that St. Mary’s Elementary and High School canceled classes on Monday and Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital was temporarily closed. A modified emergency room was set up at the O’Neill Community Center and all hospital appointments were cancelled.
