FC Barcelona versus Bayern Munich line-up: Flick has a surprise

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick will make a major change to his line-up on Wednesday when the Catalans host Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Bavarians have been repeatedly described by the local press as a ‘bogeyman’ for Barcelona in Europe, and it was Flick who, of course, oversaw the darkest night on the continent in 2020.

That happened in Lisbon, when Covid forced the UCL knockout stages to be restructured into one-and-away matches instead of two-legged matches.

In the quarter-finals, Flick’s Bayern dismantled a Barca led by Lionel Messi 8-2 at the Estadio da Luz, and then lifted the trophy with big ears, completing an impressive treble.

There have been a few group stage meetings where Bayern have consistently come out on top. But for Flick, the past is in the past and new chapters must be written.

“We prepare for every match by analyzing the opponent. But it’s clear that it’s a special match, I played there, I trained there… I have a lot of acquaintances and I have relationships with some people there,” Flick noted.

“But I am in a different chapter of my life and I am happy here. I have very good feelings. We want to be prepared. We analyze the opponent, just like everyone else, even though I know Bayern better. It will be a complicated match. It’s the Champions League. It’s going to be a good match,” said Flick.

Currently at the top of La Liga, just four days after El Clasico against title rivals Real Madrid, Barca are on a high after recently beating Sevilla 5-1 at the same Montjuic Stadium that hosts Bayern.

Flick will make few changes from the side that saw off the Andalusians, with Fermin Lopez coming into midfield to partner Pedri for Marc Casado while Ansu Fati was dropped.

Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal form the front three from left to right and will try to trouble Manuel Neuer.

Back in defense, Inaki Pena is protected by Alejandro Balde, Inigo Martinez, Pau Cubarsi and Jules Konde, who are accused of keeping the likes of Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala secret.
