Fetterman rejects Gaetz nomination for attorney general

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., described President-elect Trump’s choice of Rep. Matt Gaetz as his next attorney general as a “kind of god-level trolling.”

Speaking to reporters, Fetterman acknowledged that some of Trump’s choices were good, but stopped short of putting Gaetz in that category.

“It’s kind of like God-level trolling just to cause a meltdown,” he said. ‘But actually the Democrats’ opinion of Gaetz is not really interesting. The good opinions come from my colleagues on the other side, the Republican Party, on how to justify voting for that rejection. “

In addition to Gaetz, Trump has nominated Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., as secretary of state and Rep. Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., as Ambassador to the United Nations. Those were serious choices, Fetterman said.

He also noted that Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., was Missouri’s attorney general before he was elected to Congress.

“He would have been a good choice. And then you take out someone like that,” Fetterman said of Gaetz’s selection. “That’s just nothing more than trolling. The interesting answers will come from my colleagues in the Republican Party that they will vote or justify voting for this mess.”

Gaetz could face an uphill battle for Senate confirmation.

“He will never be confirmed,” one Republican senator, who was granted anonymity to speak freely, told Fox News Digital. Another Senate Republican source said, “That’s not going to happen.”

Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives on Wednesday after Trump announced his nomination.

The Home ethics research is investigating Gaetz over allegations of sexual misconduct, illegal drug use and accepting inappropriate gifts.

Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., chairman of the Ethics Committee, said: “If a member is no longer a member of Congress, Ethics has no jurisdiction. So if Matt Gaetz were appointed attorney general, the ethics investigation (currently underway) would end at that point.”

In addition to the ethics investigation, Gaetz was also present at one point investigated by the Ministry of Justice (DOJ) in a yearlong investigation into sex trafficking allegations.

Last year, Gaetz’s office said the DOJ ended its investigation and decided he would not be charged with any crime.
