First warning weather on Tuesday ‘evening’ with locally strong easterly winds; and more rain to come

Cold showers will continue to move inland this evening with even some thunder. These showers will finally taper off at sunrise Tuesday, but not before another cold night with sleet/snow mixed in the showers like we saw today. Expect patches of snow and snowmelt over the Coast Range and everywhere above 5,000 feet in the Cascades. Another 3-5″ will fall over the next 24 hours.

After a brief break tomorrow morning/afternoon, steady light rain returns Tuesday evening as a strong Pacific storm develops (and remains) well offshore. This system will bring gusty southerly winds to the coastline tomorrow evening, but not damaging speeds.

Tomorrow evening we will have an unusual weather situation. There is a gusty easterly wind coming from the Cascades, which is normal. But models continue to indicate that a “mountain wave” could develop that could bring significantly stronger winds to specific spots. In the past, this setup has produced damaging winds in only some parts of Clark County or the foothills of the northern Oregon Cascades. Sometimes also towards Kalama/Longview. The possibility is high enough that we will declare a First Alert Day in those areas for tomorrow evening, i.e. from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. For most of us in the lowlands we will just see normal breezy easterly winds tomorrow evening. The first warning is to make you aware that there is a possibility of stronger winds in some areas. The rest of tomorrow night will be quiet, the showers will continue and the wind will turn southerly.

Showers will continue on Wednesday with more rain on and off for the rest of the week. We are not seeing heavy rainfall due to flooding and at this time we are not seeing a deep low pressure area due to high winds.
