Flood warning in effect until Monday morning: Record-breaking rainfall possible

A FLOOD WATCH will be in effect for at least 6 a.m. Sunday night through Monday morning in the South Texas panhandle due to a large-scale rain event. Rain rates of up to 1″/hour are possible, with localized rain totals of 3 to 4 inches possible.

Many areas along Highway 60 and in the Southeast will see 1 to 2 inches of rain over the next 24 hours. This significant rain event will fall on already saturated soils this month due to recent rain events in the Texas Panhandle.

To date in November, Amarillo has received over 4 inches of rain, putting this month in the top 3 wettest Novembers on record since 1892. Borger and Dalhart, Texas are also experiencing one of the wettest Novembers on record and Childress is already experiencing its wettest November on record.

With more rain falling tonight and tomorrow, climate locations across the panhandle could likely change the record books before we even get to Tuesday of next week, with both daily record rain amounts and monthly record rain amounts.

The rain will fall around 7 p.m. on Sunday and will last most of the night. Rain should leave the region from the southwest to the northeast by 6 a.m. Monday morning. However, the eastern panhandles may still see intermittent rain showers Monday afternoon.
