Flood warnings, dangerous seas and dangerous rip currents

The National Weather Service has issued several warnings as unsettled weather marks the start of November for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with conditions favoring heavy rains, flash flooding, dangerous seas and dangerous currents.

Forecasters expect that favorable environmental factors, combined with abundant moisture, will create ideal conditions for persistent showers and thunderstorms, with precipitation totals estimated between 1 and 3 inches in the U.S. Virgin Islands and 2 to 4 inches or more in parts of eastern Puerto Rico. .

Because the ground is already saturated, the Flash Flood Watch will remain active through Saturday morning due to a high chance of moderate to heavy rainfall. These conditions are expected to cause rapid river flooding, potentially causing some rivers to exceed flood stage levels. In areas with steep terrain, there is also a significant risk of mudslides.

Additional hazards include hazardous conditions at sea, with northerly swells and strong winds contributing to life-threatening rip currents. The Small Craft Advisories, High Risk of Rip Current and High Surf Advisories remain in effect throughout the weekend, warning against recreational and navigation activities in affected waters.

Weather conditions may begin to improve on Saturday and Sunday, but forecasters warn that saturated soils and increased stream flows could mean even short periods of moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to additional flooding.

Officials are urging residents planning outdoor activities to closely monitor forecasts and stay aware of any updates, as hazardous conditions will persist in certain areas throughout the weekend.
