Flood Warnings, Watching Over the South Plains as Severe Storms Continue

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Updated 10:10 a.m. – The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Lubbock and SE Hockley County, S Lubbock County, Terry County, NW Lynn County until noon.

* At 1008 AM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms, with heavy rain moving repeatedly over the warned area. Precipitation amounts of 1 to 3 inches are likely from near Brownfield to Lubbock. Flash flooding is expected to occur soon.

DANGER…Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

IMPACT…Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Lubbock, Brownfield, Wolfforth, Shallowater, Idalou, Slide,
Lubbock South Plains Mall, Reese Center, Woodrow, Texas Tech University, Lubbock International Airport, New Deal, Meadow, Ropesville and New Home.

PRECAUTIONS/PREPARATIONS…Turn around, don’t drown when you encounter flooded roads. Most flooding
deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

Drivers in Lubbock are reporting flooding up to the hoods of cars at 4th & Frankfort.

Today, and parts of the day Sunday and Monday, thunderstorms and rain will move through the area throughout the day.

Highs today will cool to the mid 60s to mid 70s, while Lubbock is expecting around 69 degrees. Thunderstorms and rain showers will continue throughout the morning and throughout the day.

The main threat is flash flooding, but hail up to the size of a golf ball and wind gusts of up to 120 km per hour are also among the other threats. Tornadoes are possible, but not expected.
