Florida consoles Chinese Taipei after Little League World Series win

In a display of good sportsmanship, Florida players consoled members of the Chinese Taipei team after a dramatic ending to the Little League World Series Championship Game.

Players from the Lake Mary, Florida, team were seen hugging their opponents – a dominant squad that had previously swept through the 10-day tournament – while some on the Chinese Taipei team were overcome with emotion after the heartbreaking loss.

With the score tied at 1-1 in overtime, the team from Lake Mary, Florida hit a bunt, leading the Chinese Taipei first baseman away from the hit.

However, a defensive error caused the pitcher to throw the ball to first base, causing the ball to land in the outfield.

Florida’s Lathan Norton scored easily from second base and the team went on to win the championship.

The win continued the U.S.’s streak of six straight championships, the first for the team from the Orlando suburbs and the first-ever title for a Florida team.

For Norton, who was ill with a fever of 39 degrees and could not play on Saturday, it was special to help his team win.

“It was the best feeling ever,” Norton said, according to the Associated Press. “I still haven’t had time to let it all sink in, but it feels like the most amazing thing ever.”

Teams from Taiwan have enjoyed decades of success, winning 17 titles between 1969 and 1996. But since then, a team from the country has only competed once before (in 2009), according to AP.

The loss was apparently hard on everyone involved, including the team’s coaches, who looked dejected after the final. They did not appear at the post-match press conference, multiple media reported.
