Florida State to pay Memphis $1.3 million for Saturday’s game

play

Florida State will pay $1.3 million for Saturday’s game at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee against Memphis, the former school of the Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell.

Norvell played four seasons at Memphis, compiling a 38-16 record. In December 2019, he was hired by Florida State, replacing the fired Willie Taggert after leading the Tigers to four consecutive postseason appearances, including the Cotton Bowl.

The contract for the Memphis match was signed six months after Norvell’s appointment and the payment of $1.3 million must be made no later than February 15, 2025.

Mike Norvell takeover

Florida State, which lost its first two games this season, is investing in Norvell for now. At this point, firing him would result in the school paying him $65 million not to coach or 85 percent of his base salary plus additional pay over the remainder of a contract that expires Dec. 31, 2031.

The amount would be contingent on Norvell’s obligation to find another job, with the income from that position being offset against what FSU would owe him.
