Former NFL star Abner Haynes, a pioneering player in the early days of the American Football League (AFL), has died at the age of 86. Haynes, who played as a running back and receiver for the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs, was a beloved figure in football history, known both for his achievements on the field and his contributions to civil rights in the sport.

Haynes died Thursday in Dallas, Texas. The news was confirmed by the Kansas City Chiefs, who offered their condolences to his family. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt said: “Abner was one of the first great stars of the Dallas Texans and the American Football League. He was not only a remarkable player, but a man of courage and leadership who continued to be a positive influence in his community long after he hung up his boots.”
