Former Browns offensive lineman criticizes organization for QB decision

The Cleveland Browns The quarterback situation has reached critical mass, and even former Browns players have an opinion about it.

After another Browns loss on Sunday – 20-16 to the Philadelphia Eagles – with Cleveland falling to 1-5 on the season, head coach Kevin Stefanski was adamant they would stick with it Deshaun Watson bottom center. The statement came after the offense failed to reach 20 points for the sixth time this season, pushing its streak of touchdownless possessions to 29 consecutive points.

That decision doesn’t sit well with ex-Brown offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz, so much so that the retired lineman turned to X to share his frustrations on behalf of the locker room he was once a part of.

“It’s incredibly stupid to do this to the rest of the team,” Schwartz’s message began. He further mentioned his former teammate Joel Bitonio and star defensive end Myles Garrett as two guys he feels sorry for as they put their bodies on the line for a quarterback who seems to have lost it.

As a former player, Schwartz certainly offers a unique perspective on the situation. His relationship with Bitonio in particular adds some nuance to the conversation. Schwartz, a Super Bowl LIV champion, spent four seasons with the Browns from 2012 to 2015. He spent the last five years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning the aforementioned Super Bowl as part of the 2019 team.

Regardless of his connection to the organization, it’s fair to see how a situation like the Browns are in could ultimately become a point of contention in a locker room.

For now, Browns players continue to publicly show their support for Watson despite the devastating start to the season. However, if the losses continue to pile up, there’s always the possibility that Watson’s own teammates will feel differently about the situation, perhaps only in private.

In the meantime, there are plenty of fans who share Schwartz’s sentiments that the franchise is doing the rest of the team a disservice by continuing to start Watson.
