Former chef suddenly available for reunion after falling out with Rival

Tuesday is the NFL trade deadline and many eyes are on the Kansas City Chiefs to see if they will make any last-minute moves. The Chiefs are a perfect 8-0 to start the season as they chase a potential third straight Super Bowl victory, so it wouldn’t be surprising if general manager Brett Veach looks to add even more depth to head coach Andy Reid’s arsenal.

However, the trade market isn’t the only way for the Chiefs to add another player or two. It’s the time of the NFL season when teams cut veteran players who no longer fit into their plans, meaning Kansas City could opt to sign some free agents instead of trading draft picks for staff.

If the Chiefs are looking to add another player to the roster, the perfect option just became available.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Buffalo Bills are releasing veteran safety Mike Edwards. According to Pelissero, the former 2019 third-round pick was granted his release after requesting it from Bills management, which will happen barring a trade on Tuesday.

Chiefs fans are more than familiar with Edwards.

After starting his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former Kentucky/Hawaii product signed a one-year contract with Kansas City before the 2023 season. He collected 39 solo tackles, seven passes defended and two interceptions without missing a single playoff or postseason game, and played a role in the franchise’s last Super Bowl victory.

Edwards’ performance in 2023 earned him a one-year deal with the Bills this offseason. But much to his dismay, his role with his new team was virtually non-existent. He only played well in three of Buffalo’s first nine games, logging just seven defensive snaps while playing 13 on special teams.

Even though the Bills are having a solid season, it’s clear that Edwards is craving more responsibility. While the Chiefs are already solid on defense, the veteran defenseman could find opportunities to play in the secondary as Nazeeh Johnson is still in the concussion protocol while Jaylen Watson is likely out for the rest of the year with a broken ankle.

Considering the 2023 campaign was one of the best of his NFL career, it wouldn’t be shocking if Edwards is open to reuniting with the Chiefs. Not only would joining Kansas City result in more playing time, but the Chiefs also offer him the best chance at winning his third championship ring.

After all, the Chiefs enter Week 10 with the best Super Bowl LIX odds (+420) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
