Former Pittsburgh Steelers Star Wide Receiver dominates in rebounding game with new team

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster had his best game in more than three years on Monday Night Football, beating the New Orleans Saints. Smith-Schuster had 130 receiving yards and became the focal point of a Chiefs passing attack that is missing its top two wide receivers in Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice. Both players are expected to miss the entire season.

Smith-Schuster has struggled with the Steelers since the 2020 season due to injuries and declining play. He suffered a near season-ending shoulder injury in 2021, his final year with the Steelers. 2022, his other year with the Chiefs, was his best season with the team. He had a mediocre 2023 after signing a three-year contract with the New England Patriots and dealing with recurring knee problems.

After his release in August, Smith-Schuster signed with the Chiefs, giving them a physical slot wide receiver. Now they’re reaping the rewards of that move, as Smith-Schuster has split the Saints’ zone coverage for most of the game. He, along with Travis Kelce and Kareem Hunt, were the key ingredients that allowed Patrick Mahomes to distribute the ball down the field in the Chiefs’ 26-13 victory over the Saints.

He had just two receptions for 17 yards before this game. Still only 27 years old, Smith-Schuster’s health has forced him to lose some of his explosiveness from early in his career, but things started to pop on Monday night. It could be a springboard that allows Smith-Schuster to regain some of his old form in a quest for his second career Super Bowl.
