Former Texans All-Pro WR gets chance to chase Super Bowl ring with AFC West contender

Tennessee Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (10) is introduced before a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, Sunday, January 7, 2024.

The Houston Texans will still have to deal with former All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, but he will not return to NRG Stadium in 2024.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs are working to complete a trade that would send the Tennessee Titans wide receiver to Arrowhead Stadium in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick.

The deal is expected to close Wednesday afternoon. The 31-year-old Hopkins is expected to line up against the AFC West leaders next Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

With Hopkins out of the AFC South, the Texans won’t face him on Nov. 24 or Jan. 6. Instead, Houston will have to slow him down on Saturday, Dec. 21, when the team travels to Kansas City for a potential playoff preview. .

Hopkins’ move is far from a surprise. At 1-5, the Titans look to continue their rebuild under first-year coach Brian Callahan. Outside of Calvin Ridley and JC Latham, several offensive players could be on the move before the November 5 deadline.

The Chiefs, who are still the last undefeated team in the league, have been in need of a receiver for weeks. Sophomore star Rashee Rice suffered a right knee injury in Week 4, requiring season-ending surgery. Kansas City also suffered Marquise Brown with a shoulder injury in the preseason that was expected to end the season.

JuJu Smith-Schuster, the team’s No. 3 pick, suffered a hamstring injury in last week’s win over the San Francisco 49ers and has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Hopkins, who signed a two-year deal with the Titans last offseason, is in the final year of his contract and wants to secure a Super Bowl title. He’s at full strength after suffering a torn MCL in the offseason and hasn’t missed a single loss as Tennessee’s No. 2 pick.

Through six games, Hopkins has caught 15 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. He is now the third receiver traded in the past week, joining Davante Adams (New York Jets) and Amari Cooper (Buffalo Bills).

While Hopkins is no longer the All-Pro who made headlines in Houston, he is a serviceable No. 1 option as a replacement for Rice and opposite rookie Xavier Worthy and tight end Travis Kelce. The addition gives quarterback Patrick Mahomes a new target as Kansas City looks for a third consecutive Lombardi Trophy.

At one point the hope was to have Hopkins in Houston as he won his first title. The Texans now have to slow down their former go-to guy if they plan to come to New Orleans in February.

The Texans return to NRG Stadium this week to take on the Indianapolis Colts.
