France failed to recover from their disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, losing 3-1 at home to Italy despite leading.

Les Bleus took the lead from the first whistle in the capital, with Bradley Barcola holding off Andrea Cambiaso and firing the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma with 60 seconds to spare.

But goalkeeper Mike Maignan was forced into a couple of smart saves and could only watch as the Italians hit the woodwork in the first half before equalising in the 30th minute. The intricate combination of Federico Dimarco and Sandro Tonali proved too much for the French as the left-back blasted the ball past the keeper.

Early in the second half, the Azzurri had their second chance through Davide Frattesi, who coolly slotted home a cross from Mateo Retegui into the penalty area.

France’s misery was compounded shortly afterwards by a third goal from Italy, with substitutes Destiny Udogie and Giacomo Raspadori working together to seal the tie on what had been a miserable evening for the hosts.
