The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for Pima County as of 1:10 PM on November 6. The warning has been extended until 9am on November 8.

The affected areas include the Upper San Pedro Valley, including Sierra Vista and Benson, along with eastern Cochise County below 5,000 feet and including Douglas and Willcox.

The National Weather Service in Tucson warned of widespread freezing temperatures, including in areas that have not yet seen frost this season.

Temperatures of up to 23 degrees were expected on Wednesday night and up to 21 degrees on Friday morning. Those in the Sulfur Springs Valley, including the Willcox area, can expect the coldest temperatures, the weather service said.

How to protect plants

When temperatures freeze, there is the potential for exposed plants to become damaged.

The National Weather Service recommends the following:

  • Bring sensitive plants indoors.
  • Cover outdoor plants with various materials, such as frost cloth, blankets, towels, cardboard boxes, liquid frost protection and Styrofoam cups on cactus.

How do you prevent pipes from bursting?

When temperatures drop to freezing, pipes are likely to burst due to the expansion of water. Bursted pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage during freezing weather, according to Consumer Reports.

According to the American Red Cross and Weather Service, here’s how to prepare:

  • If there are water supply lines in the garage, keep your garage doors closed.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate closer to the ducts.
  • Allow cold water to drip from the faucet connected to pipes exposed outdoors or in unheated indoor areas.
  • Cover exposed pipes.
