When it comes to volume stats, Geno Smith’s performance in Sunday’s win over the 49ers doesn’t jump off the stat sheet.

In a season in which he has thrown for more than 300 yards four times, Smith’s 221 yards was his fourth-lowest total of the season, and in 2024 he did not throw a touchdown pass for the first time. But a deeper look at the numbers shows that despite those modest numbers, Smith still had a fantastic game, leading the Seahawks to a 20-17 victory over the 49ers.

Smith completed 25 of 32 attempts – including 7 of 8 on the game-winning drive – giving him a 78.1 percent completion rate, the best of the season. But as NFL Next Gen Stats illustrates, he was even better than that number would indicate.

According to Next Gen Stats, Smith had a completion percentage of +16.3 percent above expected (CPOE), Smith’s highest since he had a CPOE of +16.4 percent in last season’s Week 2 win at Detroit. Smith was particularly sharp on short and intermediate passes, completing all 19 pass attempts from less than 10 air yards for 121 yards and a CPOE of +26.3. On passes for 10 air yards, Smith was 6 for 12 for 100 yards and an interception.

“He was dynamite,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after the game. “We talked about just sticking with it after the choice, we talked about clearing the next room, just clearing the next room and rock ‘n’ roll.
