Georgia’s win over Kentucky should come as nothing new to Bulldog fans

The Georgia Bulldogs’ one-point win over the unranked Wildcats certainly gave fans a scare. But it’s not the first time.

The Georgia Bulldogs comfortably defeated the unranked Kentucky Wildcats last night, winning their first SEC game of the 2024 season and heading into the bye week with a perfect 3-0 record.

Going into the game, Georgia was a 20+ point favorite to dominate the Wildcats on their home turf. However, things didn’t go according to plan as the Dawgs won by the narrowest of margins and trailed for most of the game. With such a poor showing on the road, many fans and pundits have begun to worry about the Bulldogs’ 2024 season. However, Saturday’s scare isn’t the first time we’ve seen Georgia struggle in the regular season. In fact, regular season scares have become a regular part of Georgia’s schedule for the past three years.

The first instance of a major “scare” came during the Bulldogs’ 2022 national championship season, when the Dawgs went to Missouri. Georgia entered the game undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country, while Missouri was unranked with multiple losses. Despite being favored by nearly 30 points, the Bulldogs fell behind by two scores in the fourth quarter, leading to a disastrous upset. The team’s fortunes would ultimately turn, however, as 14 unanswered points would propel Georgia past the Tigers on the road. The Dawgs would score 40 points in each of their next three games, holding opponents to an average of 10 points per game.

The second example came during the 2023 season when the Bulldogs traveled to Auburn as 14.5-point favorites over the unranked Tigers. A blowout win for the Dawgs would not be the case, however, as Auburn led for much of the game and at one point had a lead of as much as 10 points. But once again, the Dawgs would claw their way back (thanks to some help from Brock Bowers) to eventually come out on top, 27-20. The following week, the Bulldogs offense would put a 50-point lead on the 20th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats and ultimately finish the regular season undefeated.

The general trend over the last three seasons seems to be that there is at least one game on Georgia’s schedule where the Dawgs put on a completely uncharacteristic performance and come close to pulling off a huge upset. The other trend of these headaches is that they all come in the first five games of the season, they are all on the road, and they are all against SEC opponents. One trend that should give Georgia fans some hope, however, is that the Bulldogs often follow up these games with one of their better performances of the season. The Bulldogs’ next game, of course, is against the Alabama Crimson Tide on the road.
