Even though the Milwaukee Bucks look more like a team in need of a franchise reset than a title contender, there’s no indication that a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade is even on the table at this point.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, a deal involving Antetokounmpo is “not a reality at this time” for the two-time NBA MVP and the Bucks, even though opponents have called.

“Teams have informed the Bucks in recent months that they would make an offer for the Greek Freak if that day ever came,” Windhorst wrote. “But those are incoming calls, not outgoing and that will probably remain that way.”

Windhorst noted that the Bucks are in trade talks to add talent around Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, while Khris Middleton remains on the shelf after offseason surgery on both ankles.

“I don’t think there’s any help on the way through the trade market. … They’ve called pretty much the entire league.” 😳 @WindhorstESPN about what the 2-6 Bucks are doing behind the scenes to improve their team 👀 pic.twitter.com/2YuavjEsRI

While an Antetokounmpo trade seems unlikely during the season, the idea of him being dealt sooner rather than later doesn’t seem far-fetched. He joked that he could be traded if the Bucks don’t win a title this season.

While that comment may have been more ironic than an indication that Antetokounmpo might be planning an exit strategy, the Bucks are under constant pressure to win because they have a superstar in his prime and have spent a lot of money on this roster.

Only the Phoenix Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves will spend more in payroll and luxury taxes this season than the Bucks’ $267.9 million. They will have trouble adding talent to their roster due to the financial constraints they face as a second-tier team and the lack of assets.

The Bucks don’t have a draft pick until 2031. Brook Lopez has the most expensive expiring contract on the roster at $23 million, but he’s probably too important to their defense to be moved now.

Despite Thursday’s win over the Utah Jazz, the Bucks are off to a 2-6 start this season.
