Giants’ Daboll says Tommy DeVito won’t play 100% on Thursday

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito is “not 100%” to play against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving due to a forearm injury, coach Brian Daboll said.

Daboll is “hopeful” DeVito will be ready to make his second start since replacing Daniel Jones. DeVito was projected as a limited participant in Tuesday’s walk-through practice as the Giants try to snap a six-game skid.

“The plan is to play,” DeVito said afterward. “Yeah, look how I feel (Wednesday). Hopefully I’ll wake up a little better after I get another treatment.”

DeVito will start if he is healthy enough to play. Backup Drew Lock will do some reps during practice just in case.

The Giants (2-9) are operating on a short week with just four days between games. That gives DeVito, who had several big hits in Sunday’s 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, limited time to prove he can play.

“He threw in the walk-through,” Daboll said. “I wouldn’t say it’s about timing, a lot of depth or speed, but he threw a walk-through in there. He’s going to test it in practice here (Tuesday) in another walk-through, so I’m hopeful, But it’s not 100 percent.”

DeVito was not listed on the expected injury report on Monday.

“This morning, like today, he was there with his sleeve and I was like, ‘Are you OK?’” Daboll said. “He says, ‘Yes, I’ll be good. I’ll be good. I’m a little sore.'”

But DeVito said after Tuesday’s walk-through he was still unsure if he could throw at full speed yet. His body was still feeling the effects of four sacks and nine quarterback hits on Sunday.

“I think if it was a normal week, Tuesday is usually when things settle into your body. If you get hit on Sunday, Monday is usually a little sore; Tuesday is usually the worst day,” DeVito said. “So a little extra, whatever it is, four or five days after usually helps. But obviously this week it’s very different, so that’s why I’m looking forward to (Wednesday).”

DeVito was surprisingly named the Giants’ starting quarterback in place of Jones last Monday after playing the first ten games of the season as the third stringer. He went 21 of 31 passing for 189 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Bucs.

But the second-year free agent had some big hits in the game. He left the game on the final drive, before returning a play later. DeVito then took another big hit before time expired.

“He just got a little confused. I think he got knocked to the wind back there,” Daboll said. ‘He shot a few times. Hopefully everything will be fine with him.’

The Giants now clearly have questions about whether that is the case. Daboll gives the starting quarterback all the first-team snaps during a normal week’s practice.

Lock took some photos of the first team on Tuesday. It was different from an ordinary week.

“More than zero reps,” Lock said, half-joking.

The Giants need to cover all their bases just in case.

“I’m going to give Drew some pictures here and take a look,” Daboll said. “We’re going to keep going, and we’ve spent a lot of time on the walk-throughs, the things we put in. We just had one earlier (Tuesday), so I’m going to give Drew a couple of those.

“But if Tommy is good, then Tommy will be the man.”

Meanwhile, as the Giants prepare to face the Cowboys, they will be without outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari, who was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a toe injury suffered Sunday against the Buccaneers.

Ojulari had six sacks despite making just five starts this season as he is set to become a free agent. His roster spot was filled by former Denver Broncos tight end Greg Dulcich, who was claimed off waivers on Wednesday.
