The San Francisco Giants haven’t had a legitimate power threat in their lineup since Barry Bonds. There are plenty of big bats available in free agency this winter. Can they let New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso become a long-awaited power threat for manager Bob Melvin?

Alonso has been a fixture in the middle of the Mets lineup since 2019. His 226 home runs rank third in franchise history, but the right-handed slugger had a bit of a down year in 2024. His 34 home runs, 88 RBI and . 788 OPS were the lowest single-season marks of his career.

But even if Alonso fails to duplicate his production again for 2022-2023 (consecutive years with 40+ home runs and 100+ RBI), his power is something the Giants haven’t had in a while. The last time a San Francisco hitter hit more than 30 home runs in a season was Bonds in 2004.

Can president of baseball operations Buster Posey convince Alonso to leave the Big Apple and land by the Bay? AMNY’s Joe Pantorno thinks this will happen based on his predictions for top players in the MLB.

“The Giants have money to spend, and they’ve been involved with some of the big free agents in recent years. Maybe this is the big fish they finally land,” he said.

Paterno sees Alonso sign a six-year, $175 million contract with San Francisco. However, it’s worth noting that this prediction comes with a caveat. Before weighing in on Alonso, he predicted the Mets would land outfielder Juan Soto and starting pitcher Corbin Burnes. If New York doesn’t land Soto, Paterno believes the chances of Alonso returning to the Mets will skyrocket.
