Giants sprayed by referees miss Steelers penalty after huge touchdown

There are a number of self-inflicted reasons why the Giants lost to the Steelers on Monday night, but it appears they were on the wrong end of a missed call.

Pittsburgh’s go-ahead punt return touchdown in the third quarter of the Giants’ 26-18 loss Monday night could have been called off because there was enough kicker interference to warrant a penalty, according to ESPN’s NFL rules analyst Russell Yurk.

“There is definitely contact with the lower part of (punter Matt Haack’s) leg and the leg of the plant – and that’s probably enough to call a foul,” Yurk said during the broadcast of the game.

The touchdown, the first scored by either team in the game, gave Pittsburgh a 16-9 lead with 4:38 left in the third quarter and helped open up a close game.

The Giants punted after a drive that featured two penalties and one sack and resulted in a total of minus seven yards, with the teams tied at 9.

Haack lined up near the Giants’ 5-yard line, made a clean catch and delivered a timely kick.

But as the ball came off his foot, Steelers’ linebacker Jeremiah Moon launched into an attempt to block the kick.

Moon did not make contact with the ball, but made full contact with Haack’s non-kicking leg.

The punter fell awkwardly over the top of the linebacker as Steelers back Calvin Austin III, 54 yards downfield, began to weave his way through the G-men en route to a 73-yard touchdown.

Thinking aloud about why a foul wasn’t called on the play, Yurk — formerly the NFL’s vice president of instant replay and administration — said, “it looked like there was a blocking play by No. 45 (Tomon Fox) in (Haack ).”

The replay, which was shown over Yurk’s commentary, showed Fox pushing Moon as he rushed toward the gambler.

But Fox relinquished his pressure long before the defender made contact with the kicker. Moon took two more steps and turned his approach angle before crashing into Haack.

A penalty was called during the play, but not on Moon.

The Giants were flagged for an illegal formation, which Steelers coach Mike Tomlin promptly denied.

If Moon had been ruled a punt foul, the penalties would have been offset and the Giants would have punted again.

The loss marked the Giants’ third straight, dropping them to 2-6, and they will face the Commanders at MetLife Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
