San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy underwent an MRI early last week after suffering a shoulder injury during the team’s Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Initially, the team believed the injury required only rest, and remained optimistic about his availability for the crucial Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers.

However, after Purdy was severely limited in practice, the 49ers ruled him out on Friday. His status for next weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills remains “up in the air.”

On Sunday morning, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer revealed that Purdy underwent a second MRI after experiencing significant throwing issues during Thursday’s practice. He ultimately left the session to receive treatment for his sore shoulder, causing him to cancel his post-training press conference with reporters and casting serious doubt on his availability this weekend.

“So he hurt his shoulder last week against Seattle, and on Monday they gave him an MRI, which showed he was having trouble with his shoulder,” Glazer said. “Tuesday, Wednesday, practice. They thought he was at the right pace there. And then, Thursday, he went out and tried to throw. It just kept haunting him.

“So what no one knows is that they gave him another MRI on Thursday, but nothing else showed up. So they’re kind of living with the question of when he’s going to get back there. They’re just going to try to rehabilitate it, I hope he comes back next week. They just don’t know right now.

Despite the setback, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers remain optimistic about Purdy’s chances of playing against the Bills. The team does not view the injury as a long-term problem, although they acknowledge some uncertainty.

“49ers believe QB Brock Purdy should be able to return next Sunday in Buffalo despite his shoulder soreness,” Schefter wrote. “On the other hand, they also thought he would be able to start today in Green Bay before he couldn’t. Still, there doesn’t seem to be any major concerns for the time being.”
